Physiotherapy

What is Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a health care profession which promotes the development, maintenance, and restoration of optimal movement and function throughout the lifespan. Physiotherapy is regulated in Ontario under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA). All physiotherapists in Ontario are registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO). Physiotherapists are university educated health professionals and are qualified to treat many physical problems caused by disease, illness, surgery, sport, work, and motor vehicle related injuries, aging, and general inactivity. Their scope of practice can include the fields of orthopaedics, neurology, cardiorespiratory, paediatrics, womens’ health, seniors' health, and sports medicine.

After a comprehensive assessment, including taking a thorough health history, evaluation of pain, movement patterns, range of motion, and strength, an appropriate treatment program is developed and mutual goals set with the client. Treatment may include the following:

  • manual therapy, to help restore normal joint and tissue mechanics
  • the development of an individualized therapeutic exercise program
  • education on injury prevention, posture, ergonomics, safety, and the use of mobility aids as necessary
  • application of electrotherapeutic modalities (ultrasound, interferential current, LASER, TENS)
  • therapeutic taping
